Samsung TXS3082WH 30" Wide Slimfit HDTV

Samsung TXS3082WH 30" Wide Slimfit HDTV Reviews

More Picture

I purchased this TV when flat panel units starting becoming really popular and more affordable. At the time, I wanted an HDTV, but my budget didn't allow for a flat panel unit (which in 2006 were still pricey to me). Side-ny-side comparison viewing with similarly-priced CRT displays led me to purchase this Samsung. Here it is, 2009, and the TV still looks fantastic, save for a small and usually unnoticeable flaw.

Right out of the box the picture is excellent. I do not own a Blu-Ray player, which doesn't matter much since this TV doesn't produce 1080p picture. DVD movies look wonderful, as well as Xbox games. I have never messed with picture presets, since I usually prefer a custom setting. It didn't take long at all to get the picture the way I wanted it. However, over the past year or so, I started getting the discoloration effect in the upper left corner everyone talks about. Honestly, I only notice it when using my Xbox, or when the entire screen is one bright color. And it is too small to affect anything. It's also the only reason I gave the picture quality 4 out of 5 stars.

Sound quality is mediocre, but fine for a television. I have a good surround sound system, so I don't consider it an issue. I have never found TV speakers to be very dynamic anyway. I don't understand why people think they're gonna get fantastic sound from tinny television speakers. The sound is acceptable, though, and it does a OK job trying to simulate 3D soundfields.

The menus are easy to navigate and laid out in a simple, straightforward manner. The remote, though not particularly comfortable to use with my fairly large hands, was not too terribly complicated. Some buttons are kind of small, but like I said, I do have big hands. I use the multifunction remote from my Pioneer receiver anyway, so whatever.

Overall, the Samsung TXS-3082WH is a wonderful CRT HDTV. Sad thing is, nowadays you can pick up a larger sized 1080p LCD for less than the 9 price tag this unit bore. I am about to replace this TV with a flat-panel (probably the Panasonic G10-series 50" plasma), but I will keep it, as it still makes a very good second TV. I will use it until it breaks. Good job, Samsung.

  • Two stereo speakers, 10 watts a piece (20 watts total)
You don't have to take out a second mortgage to enjoy the brilliant colors and vibrant realism of high-definition television, thanks to this 30-inch Samsung TXS3082WH CRT HDTV. At just 16.3 inches deep, it's 30 percent slimmer than a conventional CRT TV. Samsung's DynaFlat screen increases the viewing angle while minimizing distortion and glare, and it offers a maximum of 800 lines of resolution. The side speakers offer wide-screen design impact that takes advantage of the 16:9 aspect ratio, and the silver bezel provides an elegant and modern look.

You'll enjoy 480p, 720p and 1080i high-definition viewing right out of the box thanks to the built-in digital ATSC tuner, which pulls HD signals right from the airwaves. You can also connect the set to an optional receiver or cable/satellite set-top box using either the dual HDMI or dual component connections. An analog NTSC tuner receives standard-definition (SD) programming.

The TXS3082WH is packed to the gills with advanced video and audio features. The 3D Y/C digital comb filter constantly analyzes the three dimensions of picture height, picture width, and picture changes-over-time to dramatically reduce edge image artifacts while improving transition detail. The 3:2 pulldown cinema video processing feature detects and compensates film--which is shot at 24 frames per second (fps) compared with video's 30 fps rate--to video for a smooth theater-like experience at home. The velocity scan modulation function improves black to white image transitions for sharper detail and enhanced picture definition in high brightness operating conditions.

It also includes an Invar shadow mask for rendering detailed, high-contrast images free of geometric distortion. A shadow mask is a thin sheet of perforated metal behind the screen that restricts electron flow, each hole in the sheet corresponding to a single pixel. An Invar mask uses an alloy that's especially resistant to the high temperatures generated by the electron beam, allowing a brighter, clearer picture.

Choose the mode (standard, dynamic, movie, or custom with adjustable brightness, contrast, sharpness, and color selections) that best suits the program you're watching. You can also select from five screen filling modes--normal, wide, zoom 1, zoom 2, or panorama (which stretches less in the middle and more towards the edge). It has a number of convenience features, including Remote Surf timer (returns TV to original channel so other channels can be browsed during commercial breaks), sleep timer, V-Chip parental controls, auto channel programming, channel labeling, and tri-lingual on-screen displays (English, French, and Spanish).

It features two built-in, 5-watt speakers and right/left stereo output for connection to a home theater audio system. The Auto Volume Leveler feature keeps audio volume consistent during channel changing to minimize static sound bursts, and it offers four preset sound modes (standard, movie, music, and speech). High-quality virtual surround sound can be experienced with just the speakers built into the sides of the TV. SRS TruSurround XT technology delivers an amazing, simulated 3D effect with clear dialog and powerful bass. Enjoy progressive scan DVD playback or game play using the component video inputs. The full line-up of video and audio connections includes:

  • Composite AV (RCA): 2 (1 side) in, 1 out
  • S-Video: 1 (side) in
  • Component Video: 2 in
  • HDMI: 2 in
  • RF: 2 in

Tech Talk
HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. It provides up to a 5 GB per second bandwidth for transmitting pure digital video and audio signals with no degradation in the transfer. It can carry up to eight discrete audio channels, making it compatible with 7.1-channel surround sound systems. Signals are encrypted with HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) to prevent recording. HDMI is fully backward-compatible with most DVI connections .

Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.

High Definition Formats: The most common high-def (HD) video format is 720p, which displays video at 720 vertical by 1280 horizontal pixels. The "p" denotes that it is progressive scan, meaning that all video lines are filled at the same time. The 1080i format displays video at 1080 vertical by 1920 horizontal pixels, and the "i" means that it is interlaced (the old-school way of presenting video where the screen scans the odd-numbered video lines first, then the even-numbered lines). The 1080p format has the same pixel resolution as 1080i, but it is a progressive scan format and thus has a constant vertical resolution of 1080 lines.

TruSurround XT audio adds three new audio enhancement technologies to produce an amazingly immersive sound experience.

  • Dialog Clarity brings movie dialog into ÒfocusÓ during the playback of any surround-encoded material to make speech much clearer and crisper.
  • TruBass creates incredible deep rich bass allowing a person to perceive significantly deeper, richer low bass tones that are far beyond the physical low frequency capabilities of the speaker itself.
  • The SRS WOW feature widens the soundstage by processing standard two-channel stereo material as well as multi-channel encoded material for a dramatic improvement in the playback of any stereo audio over a two-speaker system.

LEMON - DO NOT BUY!!! - D. Hughes - Culpeper, VA
This tv isn't even worth one star! We bought this tv in April 2006 based on reviews from Consumer Reports that tube tv's had better quality and were more reliable than LCD and Plasma sets. Naturally the slim fit with all the other features and the price seamed appealing. We bought this set for 0.00 from Sears and purchased the extended warranty for an additional 0.00. Since our purchase we have had the set serviced 3 different times and had the mother board replaced. We have had numerous issues which include a yellow cloud in the upper right hand side of the screen. The tech told us it was due to "magnetic interference" and we should try moving electronic devices around to see if it resolves the problem. The tech then used this "wand" that he waved around the screen which I guess "blended" or corrected the pixels. Needless to say, the yellow cloud re-appeared. We then decided to re-new our warranty another year, naturally since we had issues already. (Total 0.00 + 0.00 for warranty = 0.00 vested in this LEMON). Then the set developed this high pitched sound that comes and goes. We had another service call in which the tech replaced the mother board. It appeared to have fixed the problem for a few months but it started again. Our most recent issue is the tv sound and audio was out of sinc. Then it started turning off all by itself. Even the power light would go out. Had to unplug the set and turned it back on. It would stay on for about 20 minutes and shut off again. Each time the duration that it would stay on got shorter and shorter. Finally the screen went completely red, then all went dead with only a red vertical line across the middle of the screen. Now the tv wont even turn on. Called Samsung and they we very UNHELPFUL. Called a technician and was told it sounded like the Deflection Module has gone bad and would cost around 0.00 to fix. NO WAY! I refuse to sink more money into this LEMON. I will never buy another product from Samsung. We vested 0.00 into this tv for only 3 1/2 years of use! This tv should have lasted much longer! Samsung does not stand by their products. Every opportunity I have I will express how terrible Samsungs products and services are. There should be a recall on this piece of junk!
