3 Year Update:

Still going strong. While it's falling behind on the HD resolution compared to new TVs, it is fine for watching TV programs and standard DVDs. Great for Comcast OnDemand programs, too. No breakdowns of any kind. Highly reliable and built like a tank. Will probably end up in a bedroom soon for many more years of service.

Prior Review:

I've seen a lot of bad reviews here. I may have been fortunate, or others just got part of a bad batch. Not a single problem in over 18 months. Works like a dream. And I paid 350.00 including shipping in '05. Not a refurb, either.

The only significant complaint I have is that it is a 15:9 aspect ratio. The top and botton are slightly cropped. It's only a problem when a sports event displays stats very high or very low on the picture, such as with some football games. It can get cut off a bit then. Another minor complaint is that it has a 1-second pause when switching inputs. If I need to go from the input 1 source to the input 4 source, it seems to take a long time to get through the inputs.

Positives: Outstanding for DVD movies. Great picture with analog cable. You just can't beat a tube. No artifacts like you get with a plasma or LCD.

Remote is very good, and the set works automatically with my cable remote.

It is very heavy, but it's a welcome change from some of the paper thin plastic electronics gear I'm seeing a lot of lately. Everything in electronics seems so flimsy now, it's nice to have a tank sometimes. Once you put it in place, why would you need to move it?

Philips 30PW850H 30" Widescreen HDTV-Ready TV Feature

  • 30-inch widescreen Real Flat CRT with 2 component-video inputs; TV is 35 x 23.5 x 21.5 inches (W x H x D)
  • 1080i, 480p capable with Eye Fidelity line doubling for non-HD sources
  • Active Control analyzes incoming signals and optimizes color, sharpness, contrast, and digital noise reduction
  • 10 watts per channel, Incredible Surround simulated surround sound
  • Velocity-scan modulation improves the definition at picture edges
The 30PW850H's 30-inch Real Flat, high-definition widescreen picture tube affords today's best home cinema viewing when used with a progressive-scan DVD player or an outboard digital set-top box for DTV reception. Picture enhancements include a sophisticated 3D Y/C digital comb filter, which improves quality of incoming interlaced video signals by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped t-shirt).

Eye Fidelity provides the choice between different line doubling and scanning techniques--progressive or interlaced--so you can reduce motion artifacts like jagged edges and stair stepping, viewing material in progressive scan (480p) or a line doubled (1050i) picture.

Velocity-scan modulation improves the definition at picture edges, creating sharper images by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work--say, when rendering transitions from light to dark parts of an image--and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas.

A shadow mask is a thin sheet of perforated metal behind the screen that restricts electron flow, each hole in the sheet corresponding to a single pixel. An Invar mask uses an alloy that's especially resistant to the high temperatures generated by the electron beam, allowing in a brighter, clearer picture. Further, a feature called Active Control continuously analyzes incoming signals and optimizes picture color, sharpness, contrast, and digital noise reduction 60 times per second.

The set offers stereo reception with 10 watts power per stereo speaker, and onboard Incredible Surround processing simulates surround sound from any two speakers.

Two sets of high-definition component-video inputs (1080i/480p) accommodate a set-top box/HD satellite receiver and a progressive-scan DVD player, while side and rear composite- and S-video inputs accommodate other hardware. Rear-panel audio/video outputs make it a cinch to hook the set up with your home theater surround receiver for a truly immersive AV experience. A 0.125-inch headphone jack lets you listen in private. The set includes an NTSC tuner for standard TV reception and comes with a universal remote control.

HDTV technology delivers exceptional picture quality and a real movie-viewing experience that makes television more dynamic, truer and compelling than anything you've ever seen before. Philips' goal has been to create modern classics that promise enjoyment and intuitive functionality before they're even turned on.Whether watching cable or a DVD movie, the optimum way to view movies through a home entertainment system is the way the director saw them. Which is wide. After all, why would you want to watch a film in a format that cuts large chunks of detail out? Pan-and-scan is a thing of the past with Philips Widescreen. Because now cinema is presented, in a 16: 9 aspect ratio, to conform with the natural horizontal human field of vision. Widescreen viewing provides consumers with a home cinema viewing experience that comes as close as possible to the director's vision without compromising the original content of the film.Philips is setting new standards for the convergence of technology and design. You'll notice that sleek, sophisticated exteriors can actually seduce customers. This is because Philips' award-winning industrial design lifts the PTV to new heights of elegance. Its silver finish and refined design whisper urban origins. Yet it fits smoothly into interior d?cor like nothing else on the market, and is light-years away from the awkward "black box" syndrome.

This is my main TV, love it. - John Reitmeier - NW Minnesota Farm
OK first let me say an awesome TV experience isn't the most important thing in my life. This is the main TV in my house. It fits the room well and I really like the picture. The HDTV looks great and as I compare it to the flat screens in the big box retailers, I haven't seen anything that impresses me enough to make a change. I'll use it till it dies! Sound is good but I have a full system so only use it as a monitor. It's Big, It's Heavy, It's silver rather than black, but I like it and will miss it when it's gone.

Stay tuned - JFG - MA USA
I have had my tv since September 04 and paid about 0. Fortunately, I have only had one problem - the S-Video connection is no longer working. Not good for an HDTV. I bought an extended warranty, so I'll have to see what happens.

Everything else works ok, but I agree with the others on the slow start up time and time lapse when switching inputs.
