Hitachi 65F59 65-Inch Digital Projection HDTV

Hitachi 65F59 65-Inch Digital Projection HDTV Reviews

Got this at Circuit City (liquidation), new in box over 2 years old. Fabulous color richness and HD depth of field. On basic cable, the picture sharpness in full widescreen is not quite as good as the Sony 65" CRT, but even there color is better. On HD (16:9) formats, the Hitachi rules. I have never seen one this good in any technology.

Enjoy huge, high-definition video in your own home theater with the 65-inch Hitachi 65F59 projection CRT HDTV, which delivers advanced optics to produce a superior picture in a thin and sleek modern cabinet. Nicely slim at just 25.4 inches deep, it features a sleek modern cabinet that will fit nicely into your room's decor. You'll enjoy 480p, 720p and 1080i high-definition viewing right out of the box thanks to the built-in digital ATSC tuner, which pulls HD signals right from the airwaves. You can also connect the set to an optional receiver or cable/satellite set-top box using either the HDMI or component connections. An analog NTSC tuner receives standard-definition (SD) programming.

Projection televisions produce images by using dedicated red, green and blue CRTs (cathode ray tubes), and it's critical that these three separate images are aligned, or converged, properly at the screen. Hitachi's Magic Focus Automatic Convergence digital system uses light patterns and sensors to automatically align the three images at an industry leading 8,192 points at the screen, and it can be activated with a simple press of a button on the front of the set.

This set features a video processor that converts all signals to match the setÕs 1080i display resolution, recreating the smooth curves and high fidelity image of the original source while reducing noise to a minimum. A High-Brightness Lens System magnifies the image for precise focus and detail in widescreen home-theater proportions. The exceptional brightness and focus is the result of a high-precision phosphor formulation and patented liquid coupling design.

The 3D Y/C digital comb filter constantly analyzes the three dimensions of picture height, picture width, and picture changes-over-time to dramatically reduce edge image artifacts while improving transition detail. The velocity scan modulation function improves black to white image transitions for sharper detail and enhanced picture definition in high brightness operating conditions.

Other video features include three HD aspect modes, six SD aspect modes, split screen/picture-in-picture capability, black and edge enhancement, and three color temperature settings. Convenience features include a sleep timer, closed caption decoding, tri-lingual on-screen display (English, French, Spanish), and V-Chip parental controls.

This set has a powerful 24-watt, two-way speaker system (12 watts per channel) that can produce simulated surround sound via the two speakers. It also includes an optical digital audio output for connecting to a home theater system for true 5.1-channel (or higher) surround sound. It includes the following video and audio connections:

  • Composite AV (RCA): 5 in (1 front)
  • S-Video: 3 in (1 front)
  • Component Video: 2 in
  • HDMI: 1 in
  • RF: 1 in
  • Digital audio output: 1 optical

Tech Talk
HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. It provides up to a 5 GB per second bandwidth for transmitting pure digital video and audio signals with no degradation in the transfer. It can carry up to eight discrete audio channels, making it compatible with 7.1-channel surround sound systems. Signals are encrypted with HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) to prevent recording. HDMI is fully backward-compatible with most DVI connections .

Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.
